Test pages:
Wim has been busy converting the pages of this site to HTML5 and CSS3 in recent weeks.
At the same time, he has placed missing text and photos on many pages. Sometimes, with the help of onlinestreetmap.org, he has also chosen to place maps on some pages for clarification.
On September 12, the last page was converted and placed on the test site. The next day he converted the test pages to where the old site was.
Of course, there may be an error here and there.
If you find errors or strange effects, please send an e-mail with the name of the beacon so that Wim can correct everything.
Almost all NDBs in the Netherlands are gone.:
According to the Eurocontrol lists, all but one NDB has been switched off in the Netherlands. A number of VORs are also off the air according to that list.
Often all traces of the equipment have disappeared. Some beacons have been replaced by a DME.
In the Eurocontrol list of August 2021, only NW is listed as a longwave beacon.
The VORs RKN, PAM, SPY, HDR and AMS are now only listed as DME. The VOR EEL has now been replaced by a new DVOR and DVOR RTM and SPL are also completely new.
Switching off the NDBs gives the listening amateurs the chance to receive beacons that were previously not audible because those beacons were suppressed by the signal from the Dutch beacons.
If you happen to have photos - for example of a changed situation - that can be an addition to the current file, do not hesitate to send them to us. For example, in 2022 we received new photos from MAS.
French and German beacons disappear:
July/August 2024 - Now that Wim has edited over 100 French beacon pages, it appears that NDBs that have once been visited are regularly no longer in the GEN 2.5 list.
After the French beacon pages, Wim edited the German pages and discovered that many beacons have also disappeared, changed or moved in Germany.
This phenomenon is also noticeable in Belgium.
We recommend that if you want to visit beacons yourselve, download the latest GEN 2.5 and ENR 4.1 lists from Eurocontrol before the trip.
VDF Nijkerk:
Every now and then we receive a question about an antenna north of the A28 near Nijkerk.
It is not a beacon, but a bearing station. We received a nice photo from Urs Keller and he also sent an explanation which he received from the LVNL.
This VDF is in the list with the call NYK.
History:
Once there were many more longwave beacons in the Netherlands. And in the beginning there were beacons with a completely different appearance, for example with a long-wire antenna.
In June 2024 Kees Verhoeven sent us a few photos of the water tower in IJsselmonde.
It shows an antenna installation which could be a precursor of the NDB ROT.
Harold Bergers sent us data of a possible WOC beacon at Leusden Hamersveld, not far from Soesterberg.
Unfortunately, we have not been able to find any information about what kind of beacon this is, there are photos of the location,
but not of a possible beacon.
Searches in archives have yielded little material so far.
The National Archives does have archives of LVNL etc. but these have not been scanned and are in a depot in Emmen.
If anyone has information about predecessors of the last beacons or knows where this information can be found, we would like to hear from you.

Let me introduce myself.
I was born in 1948.
In 1969 I became a member of the Benelux DX Club after reading about this club in a RTV magazine.
The first distant transmissions I received were short-wave broadcast stations like Radio RSA,
Radio Australia, and HCJB from Ecuador.
In 1981 I bought a Tono 350 RTTY/Morse code decoder.
A new world opened, RTTY stations who distributed news, weather reports, it was yours to read.
The icing of the cake were stations like the Cable and Wireless station Port Stanley
at the Falkland Isles.
Communication satellites and computers made that this kind of stations
disappeared from short-wave. I still listen to short-wave (broadcast) stations.
But there are also aviation communications on short-wave.
In my neighbourhood is a building that contains an aviation radio beacon.
I heard about that in radio communications and decided that I liked to know what kind of transmissions
came from there. That building is the VOR/DME RKN.
On this site you can hear the signal.
That was the start of my aviation beacon hobby.
After more than ten years the result was placed on this website that I made
in co-operation with Wim van Beek.
In about eighteen years time Wim and I made short and long daytrips
to take pictures of NDB's around the Netherlands.
In 2004 we decided to make a journey to Luxemburg,
Belgium, and France, and this way the beacon journey expanded to several days.
In 2005 we went to England for a two week beacon holyday
and we made another 5 day journey to Belgium and France in 2006.
In 2008 and 2009 we went for some days to Germany, in 2012 and 2013 we have covered also parts of Germany.
And Wim had several summer holydays in France since 2007.
In 2015 I joined Wim on a tour around France, we visited several beacons I have seen on the photos,
and also some new ones.

On these pages you also will find some pictures of beacons who has disappeared. But these pictures too belong to my collection and perhaps you will like this nostalgia. Sometimes we put in some pictures that aren't beacon pictures. Those pictures give an idea about how things go at our trips. Those trips are not only to score pictures, they are also for recreation.
I like to hear your opinion about this site. Only, don't ask me technical questions about those beacons. I'm not good at those things. But inside the Benelux DX Club there are members who have that knowledge.
